The river Bode and its tributary streams drain the eastern part of the Harz mountains. The river is polluted by municipal, agricultural and industrial dumpings. Intensive auto-purification processes are induced in the body of water and in the biotopes in certain sections along the course of the river. Intensive processes of salinisation in the area of the Stabfurt community cause contrary changes, especially destruction of flora and fauna in the river. The main enterprise responsible can only Sodawerke Stabfurt which causes the high concentration of salt in the river Bode downstream of the area of Stabfurt community, whilst geogene influences are also assumed. In 1990, Sodawerke Stabfurt caused the chloride pollution of the river Saale near Grob Rosenburg at 13.4% and the chloride pollution of the river Elbe near Magdeburg at 10.4% (SCHUBEL 1992). An important parameter for the assessment of salinization of water resources is the concentration of chlorides. Degrees of concentration vary enormously according to the different water levels of the rivers making difficult the development of an intact aquatic biotope. In the river Bode near Neugattersleben, the concentration of chlorides varied from 2670 mg cntdot l-1 (im August 1992) to 340 mg cntdot l-1 (im December 1992). In 1994, a decline of the average chloride concentration was observed towards 60% compared with the 1990's concentration. In 1995, a slight increase was observed again. In comparison to these figures, here can be only a small concentration of chlorides at the fixed sample points in Egeln (Nord) and Stabfurt: These portions of chlorides are caused by tributary streams which are polluted by salt, i.e. the tributary streams of the river Grober Graben upriver Oschersleben as well as tributaries of Ehle and Marbe between Egeln (Nord) and Stabfurt. The karst area of the Marbe and the soda slagheaps are built up by products and waste water of the Stabfurt sodafactory.
