The diet of the Mexican green tree snake, Leptophis mexicanus, Dumeril, Bibron Dumeril, 1854 Zur Nahrung der Mexikanischen Schlanknatter, Leptophis mexicanus, Dumeril, Bibron Dumeril, 1854
A field observation on the Mexican green tree snake, Leptophis mexicanus, hunting on the ground in the archaeological site at Tulum (Yucatan Peninsula) is described. In pursuit of a spiny lizard (Sceloporus sp., may be chrysostictus) the snake fell off a cliff onto the beach. It continued its attack at the waterline before it was forced to let go of the lizard by a wave. It then retreated onto a rock and displayed the aggressive behaviour documented in the photographs, before withdrawing into the scrub between the rocks of the cliff. This confirms previous observations of, a) the species being not strictly arboricol, and b) the species not being strictly anurivorous. Relevant literature is quoted and compared.
