The first troglobitic insect Leptodirus hochenwartii (Coleoptera: Cholevidae), collected in the Postojna cave (Carniola, Slovenia), was described by Ferdinand Schmidt in 1832. The emergence of biospeleology is outlined with emphasis on cave entomology in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
