The early stages of Cymothoe morphology and phylogenetic interest Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae Les premiers etats des Cymothoe morphologie et interet phylogenique Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae

The early stages of Cymothoe morphology and phylogenetic interest Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae Les premiers etats des Cymothoe morphologie et interet phylogenique Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae
Thirty nine species of Cymnothoe have been bred in Cameroon by the Author and the data he obtained allow him to define the generic characteristics of the early stages of this afro-tropical genus. A phylogenetic grouping of the Cameroonian species is proposed and discussed. Pre-imaginal morphology shows that Cymothoe is a relatively primitive genus, clearly separated from other Limenitine genera. Contrary to the generally used classifications, it has no close affinities with genera such as Limenitis or Pseudacraea, but it is possible that the genera with "euthalian" larvae have evolved from a Cymothoe-like ancestor.
