The present study was carried out to determine the efficiency of trap light sources of different colors in catching Culicoides species between May 2000-November 2000 in the province of Iskenderun. Three different light sources were used to capture Culicoides species. Black light (Philips-f8t5/d blb/8w), white halogen light (100/150 w sm-I 220v-240v 50hz) and red halogen light (100/150 w sm-I 220v-240v 50hz) were used to catch the Culicoides species. The light traps were placed in the breeding places of Culicoides in and around animal shelters or near human settlement areas appr. 30 minutes before sunset and they were collected after two hours. A total of 5293 Culicoides specimens were collected and 5 species, identified. These species were C. longipennis (97.43%), C. schultzei gr. (1.36%), C. imicola (1.06%), C. circumstriptus (0.09%) and C. obsoletus (0.06 %). Of the Culicoides specimens, 2912 were caught by black light; 2278, by white light; and 103, by red light. The distribution of the species capture according to the light sources was as follows: 2819 of C. Iongipennis by black light, 2241 by white light, 97 in red light; 37 of C. schultzei gr., by black light, 32, by white light, 3 by red light; 2 of C. obsoletus by white light, one, by red light; 54 of C. imicola by black light; 2, by red light; and 3 of C. circumscriptus, by white light, 2 by black light. In conclusion, C. imicola appeared to choose black light preferentially, whereas the other species were equally attracted by all the light sources according to the evaluation of chi- square test.
