Sites with different management regimes (arable land, seeding grassland with extensive cattle grazing, seeding grassland/mowing and grazing, permanent grassland mowing 1-cut per year, permanent grassland mowing 3-cuts per year, re-wetted fallow land, embankment grassland) were investigated by pitfall trapping from 1996-1998 in the central Unstrut floodplain (Thuringia). Year-round approach (2 transects per site, each with 5 pitfall traps) was carried out as a part of an elaboration of potential recommendations that are based on ecologically viable agricultural land use in floodplain regions. Overall 120 species of spiders with 56.067 adult individuals and 7 species of harvestment with 4.435 individuals were collected. It was shown that even after few years, changes in epigaeic arachnid assemblage structures are detectable as response to changing land use. Whereas the species richness of spiders does not show clear tendencies, evenness as a more complex parameter is well suited for indication of the agricultural habitat types investigated. Land-use conversion of former arable land into extensively managed grasslands favours mesophilous habitat generalists of open landscapes in the early stages of restoration. In addition, the activity-density-relation between linyphiids and lycosids clearly changes from linyphiid-dominated assemblages in arable land to more balanced individual relations in early stages of grassland restoration. Furthermore, changes in proportion of hygrophilous species within the spider assemblages are useful short-term indicators to control and evaluate the ecological impact of changes in land-use practises as well as the success of floodplain restoration processes.
