The estuarine fish of northern Brazil list of species and considerations on their geographical distribution Os peixes estuarinos da regiao norte do Brasil lista de especies e consideracoes sobre sua distribuicao geografica

The estuarine fish of Brazil's northern coast constitute an important but still poorly documented natural resource. Based on a survey of the literature and on collection data of fish in different estuaries in the study area, a matrix was constructed of scientific name, the occurrence of estuary species in the study area, their habitats, and their pelagic or demersal habits. Based on the fish species occurrence along the coast and with the objective of defined a biogeographic patter were grouped by multivariate cluster analysis. The number of species with preferences by determine estuarine environment, in each sub-area (limnic, estuarine, coastal), was tested by c2. According to the species' affinities, the northern coast of Brazil can be divided in two great sub-areas: i)fish fauna of the Amapa coast with the Amazon River estuary and ii) fish fauna of the coasts of Maranhao and Para States, to the south of the Amazon River mouth. A total of 303 fish species, in 23 orders and 86 families, were registered for the study area. Of these, 99 species (33%) are restricted to the Maranhao-Para coasts, 92 species (30%) are restricted to the Amazon River mouth and Amapa coast, and 90 (30%) occurred in both sub-areas. 22 species (7%) did not have specific locality data for the two sub-areas. Most species prefer the middle and inferior habitats inside the estuary where salinity is intermediate. The observed pattern of distribution of the fish communities in two great sub-areas along the north coast of Brazil is a consequence of the barrier formed by the discharge of the Amazon River, probably impassible for some fish species.
