The euglenophyte flora of Lake Neusiedler Burgenland, Austria Die Euglenophytenflora des Neusiedler Sees Burgenland, Oesterreich

Abhandlungen der Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft in Oesterreich, 32: 1-115

Lake Neusiedl is situated at 115 m above sea level at the eastern border of Austria, marginal to the Lesser Hungarian Lowlands. It is a shallow lake of alkaline, low natron saline, turbid water body. The salt content varies with the fluctuation in water level, which depends on precipitation in its turn (Table 1). In the eastward neighbouring Seewinkel there are some heavy saline ponds. The purpose of this research was to record the great variety of Euglenophyta in Lake Neusiedl. In the course of years of profound studies 139 taxa could be distinguished, among them 40 Euglena-, 35 Phacus- species and 43 representatives of various colourless genera. With few exceptions all forms are depicted in original drawings, some additionally as light microscopical colour prints. A few details are given as electron microscopical pictures. Problems in differentiation of the single taxa are discussed. Dwarf forms or variability in the shape could be caused by the peculiar chemical environment and became genetically fixed afterwards. Finally the attempt is made to draw conclusions about the origin of various species from the area in which the different species are distributed outside Lake Neusiedl. Studies concerning their ecological and physiological behaviour have not yet been made. The taxa determined are to a great extent indifferent salt tolerant ubiquitous species. Some are described from marine brack water habitats. There is a lack of conclusive physiological research to differentiate specific natron halophytic forms within these flagellates.
