The great green macaw and its threatened habitat in Costa Rica Der Grosse Soldatenara und sein bedrohter Lebensraum in Costa Rica

The great green macaw and its threatened habitat in Costa Rica Der Grosse Soldatenara und sein bedrohter Lebensraum in Costa Rica

ZGAP Mitteilungen 18(2): 19

The Great Green Macaw (Ara ambigua) lives in the Atlantic Rainforest of North-Honduras, East-Nicaragua, East-Panama and Central Colombia, its total population amounts to some 2500 individuals. The National Park "Braulio Carillo", the Nature Reserve "La Selva" and the Nature Reserve "lndio-Maiz" in Costa Rica and South-East-Nicaragua respectively are the last breeding places of the endangered subspecies Ara ambigua ambigua. Further deforestation in Costa Rica threatens the connection to the Nicaraguan subpopulation. In 1994, a study to investigate habitat demands and the life cycle of the species was started. Breeding places were registered and Dipteryx panamensis and Sacoglottis trichogyna have been recognized as most important breeding and feeding trees limiting reproductive success. Thus, to ensure survival of the species in Costa Rica, protection of the remnant rain forests is necessary.
