The section of the outcrop from Liptod exposes the upper Pleistocene (Wurm/Wisconsin) sediments of South-Baranya Hills, which belongs to the so-called "young loess" sequence (Pecsi, 1993). Its identified fauna gave important data about the Late-Pleistocene paleoecological and climatic conditions of this area. The fauna of the profile presumably could be grouped into the Catinella arenaria and Semilimax kotulai subzone of the Bithynia leachi-Trichia hispida biozone (Sumegi-Krolopp, 1995; Fukoh et al., 1995). Mesophil species are found abundantly in every sample of the malacological matter. The proportion of the termophil, xerotherm species - differently from the results of the examinations that performed in this area up to this point - is relatively low in the majority of the samples. A palaecological phase could be identified unambiguously with the help of stratigrafically important Punctum pygmaeum and the accompanying fauna. Besides these findings, five new species were identified (Vertigo substriata, Vertigo alpestris, Vitrina pellucida, Cochlodina laminata, Arianta arbustorum), which enhance the picture of the Late Pleistocene Faunal record in the area. Some specimens of two cooling-down marker species (Vallonia tenuilabris, Columella columella) found in this section, indicate the effect of climatic cooling during this period. However it must be mentioned, that the cold snap period developed less pronounced due to the prevailing sub-Mediterranean climatic effect and the larger vegetation cover of this area. The consequence of this can be interpreted, that the computed July mean temperature (tjulydeg. ) values do not fall below 15deg. C. This lowest value is still higher with some degrees Celsius than the values from the northern part of the Carpathian Basin; that calculated on the basis of the examinations.
