The Sabu Island python (Liasis mackloti savuensis Brongersma, 1956) was "discovered" for the pet trade in 1993. It is endemic to tiny Sabu Island (414 km2) in south eastern Indonesia and the original habitat was forest. L. in. savuensis became popular with reptile hobbyists shortly after being introduced into the wildlife trade, and up to 5000 live specimen annually were wild caught and exported. After the implementation of export quotas and a total export ban in 2004, trade virtually stopped, but appr. 300 wild specimen are still being traded illegally every year by known trader and exporter. Sabu Island has a relatively dry climate and has been largely deforested. The landscape is now dominated by palm plantations, rice fields, agricultural land and wasteland, with heavy erosion during the monsoon season. Sabu Island pythons seem to be still reasonably common on the island but more detailed population surveys need to confirm that impression, and research needs to be conducted into the effects of habitat change on this species.
