Trophic ecology of the carrura Bairdiella ronchus Pisces Sciaenidae in Cienaga Grande of Santa Marta, Caribean Colombia Ecologia trofica de la carrura Bairdiella ronchus Pisces Scienidae en la Cienaga grande de Santa Marta, Caribe Colombiano
Between February 1993 and January 1994 a total of 890 individuals of Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier) were captured in four sampling stations in the Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta. Most individuals were caught with casting nets, using the "corral" artisan method. Fish sizes and weights varied between 66 and 231 mm total length and between 3.5-156.2 g total weight, respectively. The species is typically estuarine, distributed in salinities between 7.3 and 37.3. Bairdiella ronchus was characterized as being a third order consumer (carnivorous), because it feeds mainly on fishes and crustaceans (decapods); according to the relative importance index, fishes are a food of principal importance, while crustaceans are a food of second importance; during the dry season this species chiefly eats fishes, and during the rainy season it feeds on crustaceans. The young and old fishes feed on both fishes and crustaceans.
