The feeding biology of the Striated Heron Butorides striatus striatus Vieillot, 1817, in the Parana River Floodplain (Argentina) was studied. The results of the trophic spectrum, circadian rhythm of feeding activity, width niche, diet selectivity, feeding efficiency, size of prey and habitat selection are given. Forty-six stomachs were analysed, being identified and quantified the ingests at different taxonomic levels. The spectrum was constituted for 46 taxonomic entities: 2 were vegetal fraction and the rest was anima action. The values of the relative importance index were.; fishes: 11.174, insects: 4.930, crustaceans: 234, spiders: 234 and amphibians: 80. The accumulated trophic diversity (Hk) was 4.27. The value of the range correlation obtained was not significant (rs: 0.21 P=0.001). The trophic niche width was: spring = 6.17 and summer = 14.92 and the feeding science 97.8 in spring and 92.3 in summer. The habitat preference index was applied only at aquatic vegetation (Pi= 0.5) and gallery forest (Pi= 0.2). The monocycle pattern was observed on the circadian rhythm with the highest feeding activity at midday. The prey size was between 10 and 200 mm, being more frequent 10.50 mm. Butorides striatus striatus is a spring-summer resident with a carnivorous diet and width trophic spectrum, with a restricted area corresponding to the aquatic vegetation and gallery forest. The optimal foraging is related to an abundant resource (fishes, insects, crustaceans, spiders and amphibians) the low cost of searching allow to enlarge or restrict the diet in relation to food fluctuations. Then, the energy is economically obtained, to reproduction showing its adjustment to the environment.
