Vocalizations and acoustic interactions were studied in Hyla elegans between August 1991 and June 1992 in Ubatuba, State of Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. Five vocalization types are described; the sonagrams of the advertisement, territorial, encounter, and release calls are published for the first time. The vocalization activity starts few minutes before the sunset and extends through the night; the end of activity depends on the number of males on the chorus. Males increase the number of advertisement calls when the distance to the nearest male decreases. The number of pulses and duration of the advertisement calls increase during the acoustic interactions with neighbouring males. The functions of each vocalization are discussed in regard to the social context in which they are emitted.
