On 18th September 1998 a Yellow-throated Vireo Vireo flavifrons was discovered on the island Helgoland (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) and observed for several minutes by six birdwatchers. The bird is described and some drawings and field sketches are presented. Identification was not straightforward at that time and is discussed in detail. Initially the bird was thought to be an American wood warbler but proved not to fit any of those species. Turning our minds to vireos thanks to quickly conveyed literature and photos, we realized it was, of course. aYellow-throated Vireo. Indeed the observation from Helgoland is very similar in both date and "identification-history" to the sole Western Palaearctic record of this species before - a bird on 20th September 1990 from Cornwall. Great Britain. The German Rarities Commission has accepted the record.
