A texture analysis method is used to classify a chest X-ray film according to the UICC/Cincinnati standard into one of the four categories automatically. A feasibility study using 68 films was conducted. The results obtained compare favorably with those obtained by trained radiologists. The possibility of implementing this texture analysis method into an automatic device for mass screening of chest X-rays in determining the severity of the pneumoconiosis is also discussed.
