Artificial infection with entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Coelomomyces iliensis of larvae of the blood sucking mosquito Culex pipiens molestus under laboratory conditions

The results of laboratory experiments on artificial infection of blood-sucking C. p. molestus larvae with the entomopathogenic fungus C. iliensis are presented. The possibility of increasing fungal pathogenicity was checked by 3 consecutive passages in larvae of C. p. molestus mosquitoes. A substrate, a biomass and a suspension prepared from C. p molestus affected by the fungus were used in the experiments. Larvae became infected in all cases. With the use of previously soaked material the death-rate was from 12-32% and upon simultaneous administration of the infectious principle, from 24-44%. Subsequent passages increased the extensiveness of infection slightly. C. iliensis is not specific for any 1 spp. of blood-sucking mosquitoes and may affect different species of the genus Culex.
