Comparative analysis of the effect of serotonin on the motor function of the gastrointestinal tract in vivo and in vitro

The investigations performed on unanaesthetized dogs have shown that 5-hydroxytryptamine excited motor activity of both stomach and small intestine. 5-hydroxytryptamine evoked peristaltic contractions of the stomach and rhythmic segmentation of the small intestine. The excitation threshold of the small intestine was lower as compared with stomach. Pharmacological analysis of action of N- and M-cholino- and .alpha.-,.beta.-adrenoblocking agents has shown that 5-hydroxytryptamine stimulated motor activity of stomach and small intestine indirectly by excitation of neurons of Auerbach's plexus and directly by the action on smooth muscles. Indirect action of 5-hydroxytryptamine is realized due to release of acetylcholine or perhaps another exciting transmitter from the neurons of Auerbach's plexus. The excitatory action of 5-hydroxytryptamine on the isolated smooth muscles of the human small intestine was reduced by atropin and was not abolished by N-cholino- and .alpha.-,.beta.-adrenoblocking agents.
