The bacteria were first detected in the liver and spleen 10 min after i/p inoculation of a large dose. Defence mechanisms at first brought about a fall in the number of bacteria. When a virulent strain was used, the bacteria began to multiply after 3-4 days. Infections in which the total number of bacteria in liver or spleen exceeded 108 were fatal. In immune mice, or when an attenuated strain was used, the numbers seldom reached this level. [Parts I and II were concerned with Salmonella-see VB 56, abst. 1416].
