Different pathogen-host relationships were reflected in the course of bacterial counts during infection. Infection with small doses of salmonella strains of low virulence resulted in a state of equilibrium in this relationship, with persistent infection, which could break down to become fatal. Avirulent salmonellas were completely eliminated from the body, even after large doses.
