Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis

, : Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift 107(44): 1659-1660

Patients (11) were treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for a cumulative treatment duration of 72 mo. The patients had higher Hb and hematocrit levels and were generally in better clinical condition than most patients treated by hemodialysis. They were adequately dialyzed with satisfactory serum values of urea and creatinine and had normal serum electrolyte values. Serum proteins and albumin were slightly decreased by loss by the dialysis fluid. Peritonitis was the major complication and occurred with an incidence of 1 episode per 5 patient-months. Patient compliance is the most important factor in avoiding this complication. The aim is ambulatory treatment. CAPD is less expensive and offers better possibilities for rehabilitation than hemodialysis, but owing to different selection criteria, comparison of the results obtained with the 2 treatment methods should be made with great caution. CAPD cannot replace hemodialysis but represents a most useful alternative for selected patients in Norway, where many patients have a long distance to travel to a dialysis center.
