Disinfection of municipal wastewater effluents with ultraviolet light

Inactivation of fecal coliforms by an UV-light water sterilization unit was evaluated. A variety of wastewater qualities was tested, including activated sludge effluent, activated sludge effluent with waste activated solids added, sand-filtered effluent, mixed-media filtered effluent, primary clarifier effluent and trickling filter effluent. An empirical model based on theoretical contact time and average light intensity was developed that describes the results of the inactivation studies. From this model, it is possible to estimate the cost of UV disinfection of wastewater as a function of UV-light transmittance through the water at 254 nm and the level of fecal coliform inactivation desired. The estimated operating costs for inactivating 99.9% of the fecal coliforms in secondary and sand-filtered secondary effluent would be approximately $0.0055 and $0.0040 per m3 ($0.021 and $0.015 per 1000 gal), respectively.
