Acetate, propionate and L-lactate (10 meq/l) stimulated hydrogen ion secretion in the isolated frog (Rana temporaria) gastric mucosa. By use of this stimulatory effect it was shown that these acids accumulate in the gastric mucosal cells when present in the undissociated form on the mucosal (secretory) side.
