Intravenous pyelography in acute idiopathic inferior vena caval thrombosis

The pyelographic abnormalities of three young men suffering acute idiopathic thrombosis of the inferior vena cava are described. The ureters appear drawn medially and the bladder tends to be displaced upwards and forwards, giving it a "pear" shape. Such appearances should arouse suspicion of a prior inferior vena caval occlusion, and should suggest the need for cavography unless the diagnosis of caval obstruction has been made clinically.
