Handling of Acute Bleeding Due to Gastroesophageal Varices

Handling of Acute Bleeding Due to Gastroesophageal Varices

Revista de Gastroenterologia del Peru 18 Suppl 1: 38-43

The pharmacologic and endoscopy treatment of gastroesphagealvarices have been developed grest progress in the last years. Treatment is given to control the acute hemorrhagic episode, and to prevent a rebleeding episode. Pharmacologic therapy used to decrease portal pressure can be done early and without the presence of a specialized medical team or sophisticated equipment. Endoscopic treatment such as sclerotherapy, band ligation both combined and other new devices are being using with excellent results. These procedures take fewer time and are well tolerated by patients. Gastric varicose veins that bleed dangerously can be effectively treated by using an injection of Cyanoacrylate.
