Phenotypic assays become widely available

Phenotypic assays become widely available

Gmhc Treatment Issues 12(6): 3-5

Genotypic testing has several drawbacks. It can overlook the gene makeup of minor HIV subpopulations in a person's body, and it can over-estimate or under-estimate the importance of some HIV mutations. Using cell culture assays to determine HIV resistance to drugs is called phenotypic testing. Phenotypic testing is considered a more ideal test than genotypic testing, but typically has been very expensive and has taken up to 6 weeks to complete. Two new phenotypic tests are great improvements over the previous phenotypic tests. LabCorp will begin offering Virco's test kit, called Antivirogram. It has been available for 2 years through doctors who have established relationships with Virco, but it has not been widely marketed. The test costs $800 to $1,000 and takes 3 weeks to complete. ViroLogic's product uses a similar process, but with slightly different technology, and is expected to be less expensive.
