Cardiac assist devices: present status and future opportunities

Over the last 20 years, continuous progress has been made in the technology and clinical applications of mechanical circulatory support systems for the treatment of the most severe forms of cardiac failure. In a few pioneering centers, their efficacy has been demonstrated in selected groups of patients. This experience enables assessment of the state-of-the-art devices and prediction of likely future developments.
