Photosynthesis and photoreduction by the blue green alga, Synechococcus elongatus, Näg

Photosynthesis and photoreduction by the blue green alga, Synechococcus elongatus, Näg

Biological Bulletin 99(2): 157-162

The photosynthetic quotient (O2/CO2) of S, elongatus in a CO2-bicarbonate buffer is 1.08 [plus or minus] 0.3. This alga has a hydrogenase system which can be activated anaerobically in the presence of H2. In the light, adapted algae carry out photoreduction of CO2 with H2. Three additional blue-green algae in pure culture were tested for hydrogenase activity. A species of Chroococcus gave positive results. Nostoc muscorum and a sp. of Cylindrospermum showed no hydrogenase activity.
