A cardiovascularis halálozás csökkentésében nagy szerepet játszanak a statinok, amelyek mind a primer, mind a szekunder prevencióban hatásosak. Az utóbbi években merült fel, hogy diabetogén hatással is rendelkezhetnek, mivel a megfigyelések szerint kisfokban növelhetik az újonnan kialakult diabetes mellitus kockázatát. A statinok e hatása csoporthatás, de dózisfüggő is. Mindenesetre a statinok cardiovascularis kockázatot csökkentő hatása többszörösen ellensúlyozza az esetleg kialakuló diabetes miatt jelentkező többletkockázatot, ezért első vonalbeli szerként adandók az LDL-koleszterin-célértékek elérésére.
