Abstract
Hydromagnetic gradient (HMG) waves are a magnetohydrodynamic analog of Rossby waves. It is shown here that conditions for their existence are approximately satisfied in the so-called dynamo layer of the atmosphere. As a result, it appears plausible to assume the existence of Hmg waves as traveling perturbations of the Sq current system. Corresponding micropulsations of the earth's magnetic field are estimated and may be measurable.
