A new, highly selective high-performance liquid-chromatographic (HPLC) assay for the bronchodilator theophylline and its major metabolites in human urine is described. The method utilizes an ion-pair extraction followed by separation and quantitation by reversed-phase ion-pair gradient-elution HPLC.
