Fluoride accumulation affects the levels of free sugars in the needles of Abies alba Mill. but has no discernible effect on their amino acid content. Our results indicate that decreases in the tissue levels of fructose, glucose, sucrose and raffinose are associated with an increase in the levels of tissue fluoride. No change in galactose or starch levels was observed under these conditions, however. The extent of the decrease in the levels of each of the four sugars was very similar. We propose that fluoride exerts its action principally at two points in carbohydrate metabolism: at the level of the reactions associated with photosynthetic carbon fixation and at the level of starch degradation. Our data also suggest that fluoride has no detectable effect on either amino acid or protein synthesis.
