Part time farming and off-farm income are firmly established as part of the structure of Canadian agriculture. This paper discusses points that summarize the public view of part time farming and discusses kinds of farm policies which are biased in favour of full time family farms. It takes the view that there is a positive role for part time farming to play in farm welfare and agricultural stability and that it is time for thinking, legislation and institutions to catch up on this reality. Within agricultural policy, part time farming and off-farm income should be treated on an equal basis with full time farming.
