Unexpectedly high levels of field susceptibility to the fusiform rust fungus observed for slash Xloblolly hybrid families in the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program Pine Hybrid Trials led to several hypotheses concerning causation of the observed susceptibility. One of these hypotheses involved the failure of major resistance genes to appropriately function in this particular hybrid combination.
