Optimization of breeding value estimation for piglets born alive in view of litter number differentiation and herd season

The study was accomplished with number of piglets born alive of 221570 litters from 69457 sows of a routine breeding value prediction. Object of the investigation was the different discrimination of parity (1 and following litters up to 1 to 8 including following litters) and varying length of herd-season from one week to a quarter of a year. The genetic parameters are indicating a rising heritability with ascending parity and decreasing genetic correlation with increasing intervals between litter numbers. Reduced random herd-season-periods result in higher estimated values of heritability. This implies an increasing risk of bias. Correlations between splitted sire breeding values show advantages for long differentiation of parity and only small periods of herd seasons.
