Abstract
In the Manson Oration, May 1979, Dr. Bruce-Chwatt discussed the history of malaria eradication and control over the past quarter of the century. In 1969 the possibility of the global and rapid eradication of human malaria was officially questioned for the first time and the desirability of malaria control as an alternative was endorsed by the World Health Assembly. The subsequent re-orientation of control programmes and future prospects are considered with emphasis on the underlying socio-economic factors. 94 references are cited.
