Abstract
Human left ventricles (42) were studied. Some ventricles showed hypertrophy; others appeared normal. The results of this study were analyzed by computer. An harmonic increase in myocardial cell size was correlated to an increase in the ventricular free wall weight up to 250 g. Beyond 250 g cellular hyperplasia was evident. This critical limit was determined by the number of myocardial cells per unit volume and by the total ventricular cell count. A multiplication in myocardial cell nuclei beyond the critical weight was observed. The results obtained are of physiopathological significance due to modifications of the capillary networks and interstitial tissues.
