Immunocytological evidence for beta-LPH, alpha- and beta-endorphin in pituitary gland of normal and anencephalic human fetuses (proceedings)

Immunoreactive cells were detected in the pituitary gland of normal human fetus by using anti-.alpha. (17-39) ACTH, anti-.beta. lipotropin (.beta.-LPH) anti-.alpha.- and anti-.beta.-endorphin serums. The 1st immunoreactive cells appeared from the 8th wk of gestation. The cells are located in the 2 lamina of the pouch of Rathke. Afterwards, the immunoreactive cells are in the anterior lobe. The specificity of the immunocytological reaction was ascertained by studying the inhibition of the reaction after incubation of each antiserum with homologous or heterologous antigens. The immunoreactive cells were also observed in the pituitary gland of 6 totally anencephalic human fetuses.
