Lipid peroxides and other lipid metabolism parameters in the serum of children of parents with a past history of myocardial infarct

Lipid peroxides and other lipid metabolism parameters in the serum of children of parents with a past history of myocardial infarct

Orvosi Hetilap 128(16): 837-840

Children of parents with early acute myocardial infarction were included in a care-programme. In the first group of 12 children both parents or one parent and grandparents had suffered from myocardial infarction. In the second group of 55 children one of the parents had myocardial infarction without other family incidence of the disease. The total serum cholesterol-, total free cholesterol- and lipid peroxide levels were higher and the high density lipoprotein cholesterol level was lower in these groups than in the 39 control children. The serum lipid peroxide level was significantly higher in childen of group 1 than in those of group 2. Children of both high risk groups were included in a care-programme giving advices concerning diet, physical exercises and regimen. After a 1-year-long care the total cholesterol-lipid peroxide- and high density cholesterol levels were similar in each group, the serum lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase enzyme activity increased in group 1 and the total free serum cholesterol level remained higher in group 1 than in the controls. The determination of the serum lipid peroxide level seems to be a useful parameter both for the detection of the real high risk and for the demonstration of effectivity of the applied care. Measurement of the total free serum cholesterol level may provide means for the determination of the high risk condition whereas the serum lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase enzyme activity may reveal the efficacy of the care applied.
