Influence of thyroidectomy on rat liver lipids in carbon tetrachloride poisoning

Adult and young rats were thyroidectomized and fed a low lipid diet or a diet containing 15% lipid. Homologous intact animals were fed the same diets; some of them received thyroxine by i.p. injection. Half of the animals of each group were given CCI4 by gastric tubing. Liver lipids did not seem to be much affected by thyroidectomy in young or in adult rats. They were lower in impuberal than in adult rats. Phospholipid distribution was the same in intact or thyroidectomized adults. Under these experimental conditions, thyroidectomy did not affect fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue after CCI4 administration. Steatosis was more or less severe depending on the amount of adipose reserves: these were large in young and adult intact rats and in thyroidectomized adults and in thyroidectomized young rats receiving a lipid-rich diet, but were nonexistent in thyroidectomized young rats given a low lipid diet. Thyroxine injections decreased liver lipid accumulation in young intact or thyroidectomized rats as a result of low fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue. This is ascribed to the reduction of adipose reserves caused by thyroxine.
