Deaths among narcotic addicts in Denmark in 1978 and 1979. A forensic medicine study

An account is presented of 215 deaths among drug addicts which were investigated in the Institutes of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen, Arhus and Odense in 1978 and 1979. A total of 79% were men, and the average age for both mean and women was 26 yr. The majority (62%) were resident in Copenhagen. The majority were addicted to a mixture of drugs with heroin as the most frequent drug of addiction. In 27% of the cases, misuse of alcohol was also present. The manner of death was classified as accidental in 62%, suicide in 19%, accidental or suicide in 14%, natural death in 3% and, finally, as homicide in 1%.
