During spring 1994-95 and 1995-96, in New Zealand, 15 anoestrous cows were fitted with a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device with a 10 mg oestradiol benzoate capsule for 5 days. 48 h after device removal (day 0) cows not in oestrus were given an injection of 1 mg oestradiol benzoate. Cows in oestrus were inseminated with frozen-thawed semen. On day 11, anoestrous cows were examined for the presence of a corpus luteum. Cows with a corpus luteum were injected with PGF2 alpha to induce luteolysis and treatment was repeated for those without. All oestrous cows were artificially inseminated. 90% of cows were inseminated by day 11. Conception rate to first insemination by day 6 was 45.2% in 1994-95 and 36.2% in 1995-96, 20% lower than that of normal cycling cows the same herd. Pregnancy rate in 1994-95 was in 80.6% for treated cows and 87.1% for cycling cows. In 1995-96 pregnancy rates were lower, especially for treated cows (62.9 and 81.5% for treated and cycling cows respectively). This was attributed to poor environmental conditions that year.
