To incorporate genes from wild germplasm for broadening the genetic base of sugarcane, crosses of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) x an intergeneric hybrid (Erianthus arundinaceus x Saccharum spontaneum) were carried out and their progenies were identified by sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and microsatellite (SSR) molecular markers. A total of 56 SRAP primers and 167 SSR primers were screened and 1 primer pair of each was selected for identification. All 34 progeny were confirmed as hybrids and the results opened opportunities to utilise both S. spontaneum and E. arundinaceus in introgression breeding programs to improve sugarcane.
