Adopting a more rational and interdisciplinary approach in agricultural sciences training programmes by applying an agroecological perspective to mixed crop-livestock systems

Instructors in the agricultural sciences are increasingly interested in adopting an agroecological perspective, especially when considering mixed crop-livestock systems. Here, 4 initiatives are described. In certain French high school and professional training programs (Bac pro and BTS) focused on the agricultural sciences, a multidisciplinary approach can be used to explore mixed crop-livestock systems, their functionality, their self-sufficiency, and their sustainability. Students are then asked to propose ways to make improvements. After receiving generalized training, students analyze mixed crop-livestock systems (sometimes, but not always, located at agricultural high schools). They learn to use various tools for carrying out diagnostic assessments (e.g., examining both the productivity and environmental impact associated with agricultural practices). In one initiative, 8 teams of educators were surveyed, and the results confirm that the goal is to teach a systems-level analysis method.
