Summary
In order to elucidate the dependence of strength of wool on the yolk in fine-and semifine-wooled sheep, a study was made of wool samples from the right shoulder blade of Stavropol Merino, Grozny Merino, Tsigai and Lincoln sheep. The Lincoln samples contained the smallest quantity of yolk (8. 6-11. 0%) and the highest number of pure fibres (66. 5%). The highest amount of yolk was found in the Stavropol and Grozny Merinos (16. 1-24. 7 and 21. 5-26. 7% resp. ). The Tsigai wool was the least strong. There was a positive correlation between the strength and the compactness of the wool.
