Summary
Varieties differing in ripening time were sown at varying dates so that they flowered together; after pollination of emasculated flowers in 34 reciprocal combinations the F1-F4 were compared both in the greenhouse and the field. In crosses between forms with similar ripening times, the F1 was generally like the earlier parent or earlier and no transgression occurred in the later generations. In crosses of contrasting parents, the F1was intermediate, with a tendency to approach the later parent, the period from germination to anthesis being longer than in the parents; this was particularly marked when the later form was the seed parent; in the later generations, progenies from the earlier forms mostly bred true for earliness whereas the others segregated. The most productive hybrids were obtained from crosses of the best local approved cultivars with high-yielding forms having medium or early maturity.
