Summary
The origin of the Leyland Cypress, which is a natural hybrid between Cupressus macrocarpa and Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, is traced. The various clones are distinguishable. Nearly all cuttings used in the trade are from clones 2 and 11; most of the larger trees from clone 2. Tables showing distinctions between these clones, a list of trees from which cuttings were taken, and the dimensions of some large trees are provided. The larger trees are from 56 to 90 feet tall and from 4 to 8 feet in girth.
