Summary
The yielding capacity of 3 progenies of the cultivar 'Mundo Novo', 4 of 'Burbon Amarelo' and F2 generation of the hybrids between 'Bourbon Vermelho' and 'Maragogipe' and 'Bourbon Vermelho' and ' Tipica' were compared in a progeny trial at the Experimental Station In Plndorama. It was found that 'Mundo Novo' progenies had the highest yield of coffee cherries after 10 consecutive harvests. These progenies also had larger and higher amounts of flat beans. The group of progenies of 'Bourbon Amarelo' was ranked in 2nd. Only one progeny of 'Bourbon Amarelo' was not significantly different from the best 'Mundo Novo' progeny P 516. The variance was found to increase almost linearly, from the 3rd to the 10th consecutive harvests while the coefficient of variation remained constant after the 6 consecutive crops. The increase in the variance values reduced the efficiency of the statistical analysis for separation of the best progenies. Whereas after 3 or 4 consecutive harvests many of the progenies were statistically separated from one another after the 10th consecutive harvests most of the progenies belonged to the same group of the Duncan test. This information bears on the value of precocious selection of the best coffee progenies, already described for the cultivars 'Bourbon Vermelho' and 'Mundo Novo'.
