Summary
When two mildly mentally retarded adolescent girls were reinforced for concurrent performance on two manipulanda by two independent variable-interval schedules, one for each manipulandum, the performance of the retardates was positively related to the amount of reinforcement. This finding confirms Catania's (1963) finding with pigeons and adds to the growing list of studies demonstrating the effects of operant techniques in modifying human behavior.
