Summary
In normal subjects and in patients with essential hypertension, renal thiosulfate and p-aminohippurate clearance were measured and renal vascular resistance calculated according to the formula of Lamport (Jour. Clin. Invest. 22 461. 1943). Various drugs (nicotinic acid, adenosine derivatives, synthetic parasympatho-mimetics, derivatives of dihydrogenated ergot and of phthalazine) were tested concerning their influence upon renal vascular resistance. Only 5968 Ciba (a phthalazine derivative) decreases renal resistance in normal persons and in patients with essential hypertension. In the latter, this drug also decreases systemic blood pressure, especially the diastolic values.
